The aim of the design contest is to obtain the best architectural concept of the Centre for Contemporary Art building, further referred to as the Special Art Zone in £ód¼, in terms of aesthetic, functional and utilitarian qualities.
The architectural concept should take into account the prestigious nature of the New City Centre (Nowe Centrum Miasta). Its vital part will be the Special Cultural Zone adjacent to the £ód¼ Fabryczna train station in the south. The station will be located underground (from – 16 level to the ground level). Commercial buildings belonging to the Polish State Railways (PKP) will be erected in its overground part along the train corridor. The Special Cultural Zone will comprise, along with the Special Art Zone (Centre for Contemporary Art – Attachment red) the Festival and Congress Centre and buildings of the old EC1 East power plant – revitalised to house the World Art Foundation (the David Lynch Centre) and the EC1 West power plant providing the location for the education and entertainment centre called Energopolis.
The division into the streets of four cultures is an important feature of the Special Cultural Zone. It is a deliberate reference to the early history of the city and its development resulting from the synergy of activities of the Polish, Jewish, German and Russian community. A distinctive architectural element will be built on each street housing the cultural and artistic institution representing one of the communities and actively conducting its artistic activities.
